Freelance Remuda Named Top Publishing Media Equine-Related Blog at American Horse Publications Equine Media Awards

HUNT VALLEY, Md. –The Freelance Remuda received first place in the Publishing Equine Media Equine-Related Blog category at the American Horse Publications Equine Media Awards, held June 16, in Hunt Valley.

The Freelance Remuda’s blog is produced by freelance professionals Kate Bradley Byars and Abigail Boatwright, as the host site for a podcast, blog interviews, mentorship program, community and springboard for other topics relevant to equine media.

Judged on posts from its inaugural year, the Freelance Remuda topped eight other media sites to earn the honor. Judges’ comments commended the blog’s “enjoyable” blend of personal and professional tips and profiles, saying, “The mix of posts included Q&A, photos and audio/podcast did a great job pulling the reader in and using diverse ways to tell a story.”

Co-founder Abigail Boatwright accepted the award for the Freelance Remuda Saturday night, and was elated by the honor.

“The Freelance Remuda has been such a labor of love for us,” Boatwright said. “To see our hard work recognized amongst our media peers means so much, and it inspires us to continue to build and support our freelance equine media community.”

In addition to organizing a Freelance Remuda Gathering held Thursday night with a group of freelancers attending the conference, Boatwright led a seminar on Saturday titled “Build and Sustain Your Freelance Business” where she discussed tips to kickstart a freelance business, and experienced freelancers Tracy Gantz and Jennifer Bryant weighed in with ways to develop a freelance business for the long haul. A robust question-and-answer session delivered valuable info for seminar participants. Look for audio from this session in an upcoming post on the Freelance Remuda site freelanceremuda.com.

Byars was unable to attend the conference because she was competing at the American Quarter Horse Versatility Ranch Horse World Show, but she, too, was pleased with the blog’s award.

“I’m proud of the content we’ve provided our audience, and I look forward to bringing more great interviews, podcast episodes, tips and stories to our audience,” Byars said.

Boatwright and Byars took home eight additional first, second, third and honorable mention awards at the conference for their articles and photography, including a collaborative health article by Boatwright with photos by Byars for The American Quarter Horse Journal that earned third place.

About The Freelance Remuda

The Freelance Remuda was founded by veteran freelance professionals Abigail Boatwright and Kate Bradley Byars. Beginning with The Freelance Remuda Podcast, which explores the trials and triumphs surrounding life as a freelancer in equine media, while sharing valuable tips from equine media editors and creatives doing what they love; Abigail and Kate also offer a mentorship program for aspiring freelancers in equine media. The dictionary lists a remuda as: re•mu•da (noun): a herd of horses that have been saddle-broken from which ranch hands choose their mounts for the day. The goal of The Freelance Remuda is to help train up a herd of professionals specializing in equine media, from which editors and businesses can hire to do great work.
